What’s New? Issue #7 Welcome to issue # 7 and Thank You All who took advantage of a complimentary coaching session as well as attending the free introduction to NLP! Complimentary coaching sessions are a way for people like you to find how coaching can help you to reach your goals and live in alignment with who you truly are! Contact me to set up a time if you missed your opportunity last month! There will be one more free NLP taster this year, Wednesday September 29th so mark your calendars, come, play and learn! Thank you all who also provided me feedback about what you want to see more of! I thus will offer more tips, more suggestions and more ways for you to get more of what you want in the world! In this issue I address how we use our language to shape our reality; specifically on how our language effects how we think and live in the world. In “The Power of Positive Thinking Revisited” I discuss the way people limit their potential and offer some suggestions on how to feel better, think positively and even smile more often! I also offer a short article entitled “Presenting for Success-Everyday” about presenting ourselves in public as a way of being intentional about our communication skills and representing who we are! There are two book reviews that I share with pleasure; one which emulates several NLP presuppositions without ever mentioning NLP: The Power of Intention. I review the other book: “Effective Presentation Skills” and offer it to many of you who do use presenting in public in a professional way, as well as a suggestion related to my article about how we are always “presenting ourselves” to others. What’s new? My first CD: Presenting to Win! (on sale now!) Also, visit my new website: www.trulyhumancoaching.com , check out the free assessments, resources and more! Also, watch for the publication of my first book: Getting What You Want: The Art of Living on Purpose! For more information about NLP, please visit my website at www.midwestnlp.com. I invite you to send an article, upcoming training information, comments or other NLP trainings; please let me know! This is our world, lets all be a part of it! Jim Accetta The Power of Positive Thinking-Revisited The power of positive thinking may have started in the ancients; more recently it was coined in the 70’s with a book, appropriately titled “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale. This simple notion caught on for some time with some people, yet recently has not gotten much press. I was talking with an associate recently who shared with me these thoughts in reference to feeling good and pointing our brains in the direction we want: “I know you think it’s all a matter of changing how we think about things, but it goes much deeper than that”. Now think about that… “…it goes much deeper than that…” How deep does it go? For too many people, the notion of having to live with the feelings of some terrible event or set of events is “normal”; that somehow through therapy, catharsis or simply an ongoing dose of regular suffering through reliving of such events will make things better.
REALLY!?!?!
So, if I have a sore on my leg, and I keep opening it up daily to insure how it looks so that every day it is very close to looking and feeling like the original wound, this will help? So what about when it does heal and there is a scar? I have heard many people refer to emotional issues of past as “scarring them”. I have heard people refer to themselves as “scarred or damaged”. They say this as if something is “wrong” with them or how they are! A scar is the result of healing, the remnant of and example of the natural healing that occurs in our body is it not? A scar or an injury may remind some people of the pain, what about what we learn from that experience? How many times must one prick themselves on a pin in order to learn to be careful? Or burn themselves when cooking in order to be more cautious? There is value in our experiences, and value in recognizing such information! The NLP presupposition “there is no failure, only feedback” and reminds us that in any situation, the results or reactions of our actions are feedback and offer us information which in turn allows us the opportunity to decide what we want to do next. The forward moving thinking of NLP and Coaching will point us in the valuable direction by asking: What do you want? And then next, what will you do to get what you want? THAT’S RIGHT! To decide what we want to do
next! We are not “victims” of our circumstances, of our “brain”… when we
have thoughts that run away with us, we have to remember, THEY ARE IN OUR
HEAD! And no matter how much one may believe they must live with certain
thoughts or feelings, WE DON’T HAVE TO! WE CHOOSE TO! The limiting beliefs
that create the notions of the need for suffering, pain, anxiety, depression
are those things that we can change! NLP and Coaching offer a myriad of
methods and ways to change limiting beliefs, to adjust our attitudes and to
enjoy every moment of every day! Esoteric?! Living in a dream world? Why
not?! It feels much better to live here, then most places I encounter!

Did you know that most people “get” a first impression about who we are in the world in the first 15 seconds of their contact with us? Recently while discussing the power of NLP in building rapport and influence with an associate, they said: “Well, isn’t that manipulative? I just want people to accept me for who I am.” What does that really mean? So, by learning how to build instant rapport, by learning how to influence the strength or our relationship with others, by learning how to communicate with excellence and finesse’, we are being manipulative? And, what is really wrong with wanting to influence others in this way? I say it is a matter of cultural conditioning, limiting beliefs and frames of how people construct their reality or “map of the world” that creates such a perception.
Every day we get up in the morning (or at least most of us!) and eventually prepare ourselves to meet others in the world. In this preparation, we want to make a good impression, do we not? We shower, perhaps shave, comb our hair (for many folks, this hair part alone takes up a large chunk of time!)…many women put on make up. Then, we dress; we choose clothes that we have first picked out in store, then we choose them perhaps for comfort, or for our activities of the day, yet often (and perhaps most of the time on some unconscious level) we choose these clothes so that others have a certain impression of us; most of us brush our teeth, etc… Even if we don’t make this conscious choice of impression, the presupposition of: “one cannot not communicate” speaks to the notion that our clothes, our hair style, etc… will communicate something about us. So during this initial preparation, are we not “being manipulative” in our attempt to share an impression of who we are in the world? We wouldn’t where jeans to a business event like a job interview or business meeting. We wouldn’t where a business suit to a casual get together with friends. Most of us wouldn’t eat onions and garlic prior to meeting people for the first time. Why? We want to make an impression, we want to fit in, we want to feel comfortable, we…… We make conscious and unconscious choices to present ourselves in the world every day. NLP offers a model of communication excellence that allows us to dress our behavior so as to make the kind of impression to others that counts. It allows us to communicate so that others really do hear and see “who we truly are” in all our magnificence and excellence. NLP creates an ease of dealing with others that by-passes barriers that once stood in the way in those tough interpersonal meetings. Every time we meet with someone….every time we talk with someone on the phone…. every time we come into contact with another human is an opportunity to present ourselves and make an impression. What kind of impression do you want to make? Make it conscious, it is in your control. And if you think not, what will you do to make sure it is? Book Review: The Power of Intention by Wayne W. Dyer
This book is a phenomenal read about the power of intention, of how when we think and act as if anything is possible, that the world is full of opportunity, that possibilities and opportunities abound! Wayne talks about the vibrational energy that we all have, that we all create and how what we can conceive in our minds can and must come to pass. Dr. Dyer defines intention as “…a strong purpose or aim, accompanied by a determination to produce a result”. He uses many historic, philosophical, religious and personal examples to make his point about our power of intention, or as I so often say, how to point our brain and our lives in the direction we want. It is an easy, fun and enlightening read. Let me offer this short story taken from his book, quoted from the book by Rosamund and Benjamin Zander titled The Art of Possibility that shows how simple and easy it is to point our brain in the direction we want.
Two prime ministers are sitting in a room
discussing affairs of state. Suddenly a man bursts in, apoplectic with fury,
shouting and stamping and banging his fist on the desk. The resident prime
minister admonishes him: “Peter,” he says, “kindly remember Rule Number 6,”
whereupon Peter is instantly restored to complete calm, apologizes, and
withdraws. The politicians return to their conversation, only to be
interrupted yet again twenty minutes later by a hysterical woman
gesticulating wildly, her hair flying. Again the intruder is greeted with
the words: “Marie, please remember Rule Number 6.” Complete calm descends
once more, and she too withdraws with a bow and an apology. When the scene
is repeated a third time, the visiting prime minister addresses his colleague:
“My dear friend, I’ve seen many things in my life, but never anything as
remarkable as this. Would you be willing to share with me the secret of Rule
Number 6?” “Very simple,” replies the resident prime minister. “Rule Number
6 is ‘Don’t take yourself so goddamn seriously.’ “Ah,” says his visitor,
“that is a fine rule.” After a moment of pondering, he inquires, “And what,
may I ask are the other rules?” “There aren’t any.” Book Review: Effective Presentation Skills
For those of you who have read the work of Robert Dilts, you will already be familiar with his thorough style of introducing his topic, discussing his topic and reviewing what you have read. In this work, he offers a fantastic outline for the novice presenter, as well as a wealth of useful information for those of us who present to groups on a regular basis. He begins with a general overview of his version of the basic principles of effective presentations, starting with creating a frame for the “space” of effective presenting. Next he reviews the basics of effective presenting from a NLP perspective and then moves on from effective design and implementation to the management of the interpersonal aspects of a presentation. The book is a simple read and a useful resource for the new or seasoned presenter. It also provides insights into the basic presentation of ourselves in everyday life! (See the above article “Presenting for Success-Everyday!)
Definition: The Meta Model Formal Definition of the Meta Model: A model developed by John Grinder and Richard Bandler that defines syntactic environments by which one can detect and challenge deletions, generalizations, and distortions. In other words, the meta model is a model of language that identifies how we use language to describe our experience, and how we distort, delete and generalize information to pass on some sense of what we mean to others. The metal model provides a wealth of information about how to gain additional information from people to understand their model of the world. The language patterns and their descriptions are discussed in full detail “The Structure of Magic: A book about language and therapy” See more definitions at www.midwestnlp.com/definitions
