Greetings! Thank You! & Pass it on!

Dear friends and associates,

Welcome to my second e-zine!  Thank you so much for using your time to read on.  You are part of a growing group of people interested in learning, interested in your future.  You are open to the world of possibilities; to an approach that will reduce the limitations you or others you know may have in their life; to move from a reactive to a proactive way of choosing the life you want to live.  Please pass this issue on to friends and associates who are interested in the same, or who you believe will benefit from learning and personal or professional development. NLP is about possibilities, I think we are all a universe of infinite possibilities, lets share the wealth!

In this and future monthly e-zines, I will be providing information and articles for those who want to improve their communication skills, learn more about NLP and to keep up to date with various trainings in the industry. At times I will also include information about coaching and hypnosis.  If at any time you choose to decline this or future newsletters, simply respond by emailing me with the topic line- “unsubscribe”.

Please email with any and all comments and suggestions at jim@midwestnlp.com.  Also, if you desire to include an article, comments or other NLP training information, please let me know!  This is our world, lets all be a part of it!

What do you want?

Pointing our brains in the “right” direction.

What do you want?  A simple question, as it may seem.  Yet, a question not asked often enough in the lives of so many people.  What do you want?  A question that is common in both fields of NLP and of coaching. During session after session, both being the “coachee” and the coach, we come back to the question… “So, what do you want?”  Our NLP outcome model also starts with the same question: What do you want, and then follows with: How will you know when you have it?

NLP offers a model for communication and personal excellence that is unmatched.  Coaching models, therapy and counseling models, business models all benefit from the presuppositions, models and techniques offered in NLP, let me offer the outcome model today.

The outcome model focuses on goals, on what people want.  How often have you asked yourself or others what they want, only to be offered the response of what they don’t want?  Or perhaps offered a story about “things” and still not being quite clear on the answer of what they want? And of course, once you do get an answer, is it clear?  Is it something achievable?  The SMART model offered in many business and training arenas is a good start to the NLP outcome model.  You recall, SMART is an acronym that represents:  Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely or Time bound.  The outcome model offers ways to meet this, repeatedly.

The outcome model also presupposes the importance of being goal oriented. The model is covered extensively early on in the NLP Practitioner Training. The question “what do you want” points our brains in a particular direction.  It is a much different question than “what’s wrong?” or “how do you feel?” questions too often asked in the helping professions.

The outcome model does have its limits.  I like to focus on generative change and learning. It creates a process and direction, rather than a “goal” “What do you want?”, although pointing us in a certain direction, has limits in its presupposition of permanency.  Once you attain your outcome, are you done? I think not.  It is my premise to point people in the direction they want to go, with the outcome in mind and then with the suggestion or question of “what else?”  What are the possibilities? What is beyond your goals? What are your dreams and how do you live them today, tomorrow and all ways?

What is DHE?

Design Human Engineering (DHE) is all about designing the states and experiences that you want, states that are both dynamic and compelling.  DHE is based on creation, on the idea that what we have experienced is only taste of what we are capable of experiencing. DHE allows and facilitates the creation of strategies and skills, not by modeling others but be designing those experiences ourselves!

The focus of DHE is to be the engineer of our experience; to design and create the kind of internal strategies, representations and experiences that lead to generative and evolutionary performance and experience. It has been said by some that DHE will soon replace NLP as many have known it. At a recent DHE workshop, Richard Bandler describes DHE by stating; “It’s almost like NLP on steroids!”

Seminar Review:

Persuasion Engineering and DHE (Design Human Engineering)

What a joy it was to spend 9 days in Orlando with 100 or so other NLP’rs participating with Dr. Richard Bandler, John LaValle and a host of some of the most experienced Trainers and Master Trainers who assist in these outstanding workshops! A special thanks to Kathleen LaValle who puts it all together making the events possible.

3 days of Persuasion Engineering was a remarkable experience.  If you have listened to the tapes, or read the book, then you have but a taste of the excellence that was offered in this workshop.  When John says to keep it simple, he means it!  The use of language patterns, state maintenance and state creating leading to results are outstanding.  I immediately started using the patterns and got great results!  If you haven’t read the book, buy it and read it.  Then, get the tapes, they are fantastic and allow you to begin practicing the patterns immediately!

DHE is phenomenal!  6 days of DHE was like NLP on steroids… On the first day, people who have never used trance, who never hypnotized anyone ever where putting people into trance! Then, while in trance creating states through the medium or metaphor of a “control panel”.  Using the control panel, we participated in exercise after exercise helping each other to adjust experiences by adjusting the submodalities of our experience. Thus, starting on the first day, we started pointing our brains in the direction of changing our states into whatever we want them to be and continued to practice for the entire 6 days!  This, coupled with Dr. Bandler’ s and John LaValle s  superb installation through nested loops, suggestions and more made the experience better than words can explain.

By the end of the 6 days, we were installing states of extreme ecstasy, wanton motivation, intense drive, and more!  Some of my favorites are: Intense drive, Adrenaline Rush, Determination (I use for writing), Extreme Interest, System-Recursive Feedback, Love and more Love, Confident Resolve and I installed a “Ridiculous to Kinda Serious” lever and new version of a bullshit meter…. Oh, and a great response to so many of those people who seem to make un-valuable type suggestions:  a big “NOT ME” that stops the suggestions flat in their tracks!

Both seminars were outstanding, an experience to be experienced!

Book Review: Introducing NLP

Introducing Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Joseph O’Connor and John Seymour, Mandala, 1990

An excellent resource and introductory book. Recommended for the novice and practitioner.  I use this as one of the resources and guide book in the 5 evening seminar on communication excellence. The book offers a peak at the history of NLP, along with offering a great overview of basic information along with an introduction of techniques.

Definitions: Accessing Cues

Accessing Cues: Subtle behaviors that will both help to trigger and indicate which representational system a person is using to think with.  Typical types of accessing cues include eye movements, voice tone, tempo, body posture, gestures and breathing patterns.

Definitions: Co-Active Coaching

Co-active coaching refers to a model of coaching based on a collaborative relationship between the client and coach.  It is based on the presuppositions or 4 Cornerstones” of

  • The client is naturally creative and resourceful, and whole
  • Co-Active Coaching addressed the clients whole life
  • The agenda comes from the client
  • The relationship is a designed alliance

Coaching offers the opportunity for the client and coach to not only design the goals and outcomes, but to also design the relationship so that the clients needs are met.  All Co-active coaching is focused on the client; in assisting and empowering clients to reach their goals, and to live fulfilling, balanced lives.
