Welcome to Issue #10!

     Happy Holidays!!!

As the Holiday Season approaches, let's remember to be grateful for all we have, for who we have, for who we are and who we are becoming.

It was just one year ago that two very good friends of mine shared with me their kind words:  “thank goodness, now you can do what you really like…” in response to being “downsized” for a second time in just one year.

Are you doing what you really want?

In our hustle and bustle lives, I bring to you the question, consistently, with compassion and tenacious resolve:  “What do you want?”  And in the spirit of all of you getting what you want, and the launching of my new book, I invite all of you to participate in a monthly call:

Getting What You Want: The Art of Living On Purpose.

Simply reserve your spot by calling 847-749-0759 or by clicking: coach@trulyhumancoaching.com  To call in dial 781-222-0029, code 890 for an open discussion on YOU!—All about you getting what you want!  Participate or simply listen in!  This is the second in a series of calls, ALL FREE TO YOU!

FREE!--Available on the first Wednesday of each month7-8pm!

I want to thank those of you who took advantage of my Thanksgiving offer of 1 free month of coaching!  It has been a wonderful and growing experience!

This month I want to also announce the completion of my companion workbook for the CD “Presenting to Win”!  If you have thought about presenting, are speaking in front of groups or simply want to enhance your skills and ability to turn presentations into customer gaining events, the CD and workbook are for you!  You can call to find our more or simply click on http://www.trulyhumancoaching.com/products.html to purchase yours today!

Please take a few moments to visit the “Local Events” section; there are some great workshops and free events that you can enjoy.

Again, have a safe and happy holiday, be grateful and great!

The Structure of Experience

“Everything is neither good or bad… it is the thinking of things that make it so.”

A wise person once said: things are neither good nor bad; it is the thinking of things that make it so. It is what we think, how we think, the beliefs and values we have that effect our perceptions and determine how we react in our world. Every day we act in ways that exhibit our beliefs, our values, what we want, what is important to us. The things we do, the things we say presuppose certain viewpoints that we hold, either consciously or unconsciously regarding how the world works, what things are right or wrong, good or bad, important or unimportant, etc… When we group these beliefs and values together, they are what make up our model of the world.

So what!?

Well, as many of  you know, I ask the question:  “What do you want?” over and over.  With “problems” “issues” “challenges”… the question remains: what do you want often followed by, “what do you need to do to get it?”  Too often when faced with such things, people want to know “why” they have a problem, or what caused the challenge they have. GREAT!  Then they have the problem and a reason for it! How about asking: “what do you want?” and then setting a path to change or achieve your goal or outcome?

Can it be that easy?

Can it be that easy?  Yes!!! (and no).  No, for many people because they do not yet know that they are in control of their own brains, of their own thinking, of what they want to believe to be true in the world.  No, because many people continue to view their belief or value from the same perspective from which the belief was formed, their own culture, their own family, their own history!  Einstein offers the simple but true statement: A problem cannot be solved from with the same thinking it exists.  So, what we need to do is step outside the box, get a new perspective, improve our outlook and frame of reference!  Sometimes it’s as easy as a talk with a knowledgeable and caring outside resource, sometimes its reading a good book, sometimes inspiration comes through a piece of music, art or a nice walk! Getting outside the space where the problem exists allows us to gain a different perspective.  This, as many of you know, is yet another technique and skill offered through NLP and offered through professional life coaching.  In my book “Getting What You Want: The Art of Living on Purpose” the first 3 chapters address just that:  How so many of us paint ourselves into a corner with our beliefs—remaining stuck in the corner when we really could turn around, paint ourselves a door or window and get right out of the corner!

Next time you believe yourself to be stuck, upset, or in a problem space, take a new perspective, ANY NEW PERSPECTIVE and examine the space, examine you in the space and ask from that new perspective: “What do I notice?” Keep asking yourself this question, until you are “done” noticing then shift to a new unique perspective (even if the perspective is unusual, like what would my dog say, or what would a wise priest or rabbi say).  After gaining a few perspectives, ask yourself:  How is this information useful and what did I learn?  You will be surprised at the outcome!  J
Are you ready for this NLP Stuff? (Some or all of this stuff?)

A client of mine told me recently, “I don’t think I’m ready for that NLP stuff, what I really want is to be able to build better relationships.  I want to be able to be able to get a better read on people, to be able to see when what I am saying is making a difference, to be able to have more of an impact with people.”

HOLY COW!  What a perfect place to start!

NLP is about the structure of experience.  NLP is about communication excellence.  Inherent in all my NLP training are the presuppositions of NLP!  All the trainings we do focus on two main points:

  • How to point your brain in the direction you want.
  • How to become exquisite as a professional communicator!

In many parts of the training, we focus on paying attention to others.  Paying attention to their words, their body language, and their small and large behaviors that are “the difference that make the difference”.

Too often, people are in their own head, thinking about what to do or say next, rather than paying attention to what is most important in most communication situations:  THE OTHER PERSON! That’s right, noticing-listening-seeing and simply attending to the other person and then responding intentionally with great effectiveness are the signs of and excellent communicator.  How intentional are you in your communication? How intentional do you want to be?  It is a choice, what choices do you want to make?

Book Review: Phoenix

Milton H. Erickson was a genius, master hypnotist and model for communication excellence.  There have been countless books written about his skills, techniques and abilities focusing on his great mastery of hypnosis.  Phoenix, written by David Gordon and Maribeth Meyers-Anderson approaches Erickson’s work from the perspective of therapeutic work, his ability to create therapeutic environments, his ability to build and maintain rapport and his ability to involve clients in creating change in their lives.  David and Maribeth approach Erickson’s work as modelers of human communication.  They do an excellent job identifying the patterns Erickson used in his creation, organization and utilization of therapeutic interventions.

Like NLP and Ericksonian hypnosis, the book covers the notion of generative change and the chapters include:  content rapport, behavioral rapport, cultural rapport along with sorting for criteria and frames of reference. The consistent theme throughout the book is that which is taught in all of my NLP workshops, intro’s and writings:  that of starting where the client is, understanding and utilizing the clients model of the world to help them to create generative change & the results they want.

Although the intended audience for the book are those in the human service or helping professions, the book is applicable to all you who consider yourself professional communicators—all those who communicate with other people in your personal and professional lives… for all of us who want to be even better and more effective in our lives.
